Obituary for Calvin Van Garland (1938-2024)

Mr. Calvin Van Garland, 85, of Gray, passed away Monday morning, February 5, 2024 at his home.  He was the son of the late David and Sarah Mae Smith Garland born on February 27, 1938 at Bailey Switch.

Calvin was a former dairy farmer and a member of the Pioneer Baptist Church in Newberry, SC.  He enjoyed fishing and building bird houses.  Calvin loved to argue and gloated about being right, but most loved time with his family.  He also he faithfully served in the United States Marine Corps.

On January 30, 1980, he united in marriage with Darlene Crawford.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his former wife, Linda Sue Smith; a son, Lonnie Dean Garland; siblings, Jewel, Cora, Tip, Lee and Bill Garland; grandchildren, Josephine Garland, Christopher Sizemore, Alexis Gibson and Scarlett-Isabell Garland.

Survivors include his wife, Darlene Garland of Newberry, SC; children, Carla Joe Kimmel and husband of Ohio, Linda Faye Mesvin-Flores of California, Calvin Garland of Utah, Terina and husband, Harold, of Gray, Jessie Garland and wife, Marcie, of Laurel County, Shaun Garland and wife, Michele, and Cecilia Garland all of South Carolina and Sheena Wagers of Laurel County; a sister, Virginia Faye Adams and husband, Thomas, of Saluda, SC; 18 grandchildren, Amanda Vilchis and husband, Andy Rubio, Veronica Vilchis and husband, Oscar, Anthony Penn, Joshua Penn and wife, Alexia, Daniel Smith and wife, Kristen, Kaylee Ferrell and husband, Zack, Brianna Litton, Savannah Slone and husband, John, Makenzie Litton-Reynolds and husband, Caleb, Brandi Wagers and husband, Eddie, LeeAnna Garland, David “D. J.” Gibson, Christina D. Sizemore and daughter, Amarah Clark, Desiree Logan and husband, Jeff, Brianna Logan, Hunter Garland, Christian Kimmel and wife, Shawna and Austin Garland; two special “adopted” grandchildren, Amber Setser and Serria Parms; a host of great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren; among other loved ones and dear friends.

His funeral service will be conducted in the chapel of the Knox Funeral Home Tuesday, February 13 at 3 P.M. with Ronnie Garland and William Garland officiating.  He will be laid to rest in the Reed Cemetery following the funeral service with Rev. Terry O’Donald officiating.

Casket bearers will be family and friends.

Friends may visit at the funeral home Tuesday after 1 P.M. until the funeral hour.
