Obituary for Deborah Yvonne Hughes (1956-2023)

Ms. Deborah Yvonne Hughes, 67, of Barbourville, passed away Saturday morning, December 9, 2023 at her home. She was the daughter of the late Richard Carton Sr. and Jean Renfro Carton born January 12, 1956 in Dayton, OH.

Debbie was the former director of Environmental Services at the Barbourville ARH Hospital. She attended St. Paul Baptist Church and was an active member of the Women of Faith and Women of Vision organizations. She was a talented cook and was known for her delectable homemade rolls. Debbie took pride in keeping a clean home and never missed an opportunity to go shopping. Having a true servant’s heart, she always took care of her family and friends.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by a sister, Tanya Spencer, a grandson, Decodas Wills and a great-granddaughter.

Survivors include her loving children, Sonoma Carton of Barbourville, Nicole Carton and Lamar Thomas of Trotwood, OH and Germel Hughes of Dayton, OH; brothers, Richard Carton Jr. and wife, Robin, of Dayton, OH and Michael Carton and wife, Renee, of Pineville; 16 grandchildren; a host of great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; several special great-nieces and nephews; a brother-in-law, Rev. Tim Spencer of Barbourville; best friend, Cira Amador; special friends, Debbie Renfro, Ponnee Vickers, Sharon White and Diane York; among other loved ones and dear friends.

Her funeral service will be conducted in the chapel of the Knox Funeral Home Saturday, December 16 at 1 P.M. with Rev. Charles Tinsley, Rev. Pete Clark and Rev. Pam Reed officiating. She will be laid to rest in the Rosenwald Cemetery.

Serving as casket bearers will be Mekhi Carton-Thomas, Dominic Carton, Jason Hughes, Lawrence Brown Jr., Carter Hughes and Michael Johnson. Serving as honorary bearers will be the administration and staff of the Barbourville ARH Hospital.

Friends may visit at the funeral home Saturday after 11 A.M. until the funeral hour.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Knox Funeral Home.
