Obituary for Harold Coolidge Patterson (1930-2020)

Mr. Harold Coolidge Patterson, 89, of Barbourville, passed away Saturday morning, January 11, 2020 at the Barbourville Health and Rehabilitation Center.  He was the son of the late Mack and Rose Clark Patterson born on September 30, 1930 in Knox County.

Harold was the former owner and operator of Patterson Chip Company, a wood and lumber business he started and ran for 36 years before retiring in 1996. He was of the Pentecostal faith and had an enormous love and faithfulness to his Lord and Savior and was an active member of the Gideon’s for more than 40 years. He faithfully served his country in the Korean Conflict as an ambulance driver in Germany.  After retirement, he continued to enjoy one of his favorite pastimes, traveling.  In his lifetime, he and Daphne visited all 50 states, Canada and Mexico.  During these travels he made many memories and met lifelong friends.

Over the past ten years, he spent countless hours devoted to the love and care of his wife, Daphne.  He was a faithful Christian, generous with his love and kindness for family, friends, community and country.  Harold’s life was not just a story, but a novel and he will be sorely missed by a multitude of family and friends.

On June 11, 1951, he united in marriage with Daphne Smith and to this union four children were born.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant son, Delbert Lynn; a sister and brother-in-law, Cormaleda and William Marion and sisters, Dora and Daisy Patterson.

Harold is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Daphne Patterson; sons, Edwin Terry Patterson, Alva Ralph Patterson and wife, Beverly, and Rex Harold Patterson and wife, Teresa; eight grandchildren, Vincent Patterson, Jennifer Patterson, Kimberly Skidmore, Sara Bright, Dustin Patterson, Rebecca Dillman, Melissa Conway and Kevin Patterson; great grandchildren, Ty Patterson, Lauren and Emilee Skidmore, Morgan and Kyler Bright, Jenna Patterson, Ella and Alex Dillman, Harlan and Waylon Conway, Ethan and Jett Patterson; a brother, Wendell Ralph Patterson and wife, Ruth; among many other loved ones and dear friends.

His funeral service will be conducted in the chapel of the Knox Funeral Home Tuesday, January 14 at 11 A.M. with Rev. Sylvester Dunn, Rev. Keith “Buster” Liford and Rev. Tommy Frazier officiating.  He will be laid to rest in the Barbourville Cemetery.

Casket bearers will be Vincent Patterson, Dustin Patterson, Kevin Patterson, Camden Skidmore, Daniel Bright and Shelby Conway.  Honorary bearers will be a very dear friend, Donald Kuhlman of Watertown, SD and the staff of the Barbourville Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Friends may call at the funeral home Monday between 6 and 9 P.M. and Tuesday prior to the funeral hour.
