Obituary for James Duerell Logan Sr. (1935-2024)

Mr. James Duerell Logan Sr., 88, of Kay Jay, passed away Wednesday morning, February 21, 2024 at the Barbourville Health and Rehabilitation Center.  He was the son of the late Grover Cleveland and Ella Mae Blair Logan born on September 23, 1935 in Harlan.

James was a former Knox County deputy sheriff under Jim Matt Mooneyham and Wilbur Bingham and a member of the Roadside Baptist Church.  He was a pilot and enjoyed time flying his plane, fishing, hunting, bungee jumping, riding his four-wheeler and catching rattle snakes.  James also treasured time spent with his children and grandchildren.  He faithfully served his country in the United States Army.

On September 22, 1957, he united in marriage with Shirley Etter and to this union three children were born and later on July 11, 1977, he united in marriage with Darlene Brewer and to this union two children were born.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Darlene Logan; a son, James D. Logan Jr; siblings, Vealor, William,  Grover Jr., Robert and Seymour Logan and Norma Logan Peace.

Survivors include his loving children, Kathie Myerly and husband Lane, of Jabez, Karen Frederick and partner, Jerry Bottom, of Trosper, Robert Logan and wife, Amanda, of Georgetown and Blair Smith and husband, Mike, of Lexington; step-sons, Josh Gothard of Kay Jay and Clyde Gothard of Williamstown; grandchildren, Jennifer Haas and husband, John, James D. Logan III, Tiffany Logan, Brett Frederick and wife, Nicole, Brittany Frederick, Jake Logan and wife, Brianna, Jenna Logan, Emaleigh Smith, Aaron Smith, Lauren Jones and husband, Donald, and Carla Myerly; 16 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews including three special nephews, Mike and Stanley Peace and M. A. Logan; among other loved ones and dear friends.

His funeral service will be conducted in the chapel of the Knox Funeral Home Thursday, February 29 at 2 P.M. with Rev. Denver Leddington officiating.  He will be laid to rest in the Tinsley Cemetery with military funeral honors.

Casket bearers will be Brett Frederick, Jake Logan, Casey Mills, Christian Mills, James Logan III and Mike Smith.  Serving as honorary bearers will be Lane Myerly, Jerry Bolton, Ancil Hall, Mike Corey, Greg Helton and Donna Smith.

Friends may visit at the funeral home Wednesday between 6 and 9 P.M. and Thursday prior to the funeral hour.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Knox Funeral Home.
