Obituary for James “Jimmy” Chafin (1942-2022)

Mr. James “Jimmy” Chafin, 79, of Barbourville, passed away Wednesday, June 15, 2022 at the Barbourville Health and Rehabilitation Center. He was the son of the late Ulyssis and June Fairchild Chafin born on August 3, 1942 in Johnson County.

Jimmy was a former insurance salesman and a deacon of the Parkway Baptist Church. In his spare time he enjoyed golfing, gardening, and playing rook with his grandchildren. He loved to cheer on the Kentucky Wildcats in every sport, especially basketball. He was known as the voice of the WYWY Radio Station in Barbourville. A proud supporter of the Daniel Boone Festival and his community, he hosted the “Man on the Street” radio segment, talking with festival goers about their experience.

On June 18, 1967 he united in marriage with Tina Smith and to this union two children were born.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his beloved wife of almost 55 years, Tina and a sister, Shirley Ruth Chafin.

Survivors include his loving children, Mendy Mays and husband, Terry and Steve Chafin and wife, Pamela, all of Barbourville; cherished grandchildren, Madison, Morgan and Taylor Mays and Braxton, Braden and Brendan Chafin; a sister-in-law, Debbie Russ; among other loved ones and dear friends.

His funeral service will be conducted in the chapel of the Knox Funeral Home on Saturday, June 18, 2022 at 2 P.M. with Rev. Shane Bingham officiating. He will be laid to rest in the Barbourville Cemetery.

Casket bearers will be Paul Winchester, J.P. Winchester, Braxton Chafin, Tyler Adams, Travis Martin, Brandon Collins, Scott Noah and Travis Wilson.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Saturday after 12 noon until the funeral hour.
