Obituary for Lee Wayne Zigos (1940-2023)

Mr. Lee Wayne Zigos, 83, of Barbourville, passed away Saturday evening, December 23, 2023 at his home.  He was the son of the late Tony and Thelma Brown Zigos born on December 13, 1940 in Barbourville.

Wayne was a retired teacher from the Knox County Public Schools and a former bus driver and driving instructor.  Wayne coached basketball for Girdler, Artemus and Lay Elementary Schools.  He was a devoted member of the East Barbourville Baptist Church where he was a member of S.A.L.T.  Wayne enjoyed gardening, fishing, water aerobics, traveling to 49 of the 50 states and going to the movies with Charlie Frazier and George Hammons.  He most loved spending time with his family.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Anthony Wayne Zigos.

Survivors include his loving wife, Linda Hammons Zigos of Barbourville; a son, Jeffery Frank Zigos of Elizabethtown; sisters, Phyllis Price of Rockholds and Sandy Hampton of Louisville; treasured grandchildren, Vanessa Holden, Alex Zigos, Franklin Grant Zigos and Tesla Rae Zigos; four great grandchildren; nieces and nephews, Frankie Abner, Caleb Hammons, Angie White and Ryan Hampton; among other loved ones and dear friends.

His funeral service will be conducted at the East Barbourville Baptist Church Friday, December 29 at 2 P.M. with Rev. Josh Smith and Rev. James Vandy officiating.  He will be laid to rest in the Barbourville Cemetery.

Casket bearers will be Hank Melton, George Hammons, Caleb Hammons, Ryan Hampton, Steve Farmer and Ray Hyatt.  Honorary bearers will be Brian Abner, David Campbell, Harrison Davis, Hutch Hutchison, Lonnie Kern, Jeff Ketchum, Jay Messer, Rod Messer, Larry Patterson, Roger Stewart and members of the East Barbourville Baptist Church, S.A.L.T. group and water aerobics.

Friends may visit at the church Friday after 12 Noon until the funeral hour.
