Bangali, Union Power Way Past Midway

“It was a solid performance this event and a positive way to start the season,” said head coach Jonathan Shaw. “Two years ago, we lost to Midway and last year we beat them 1-0. So tonight’s 5-0 win shows the improvements we have made as a team over the years.”

BARBOURVILLE, Ky. – Edson Bangali started the Union College men’s soccer team 2019 season with a bang, scoring two goals in tonight’s 5-0 win over Midway University (Ky.) on Saturday.

Along with Bangali, Duarte Rebelo, Andre Marques, and Sebastian Mbaya each scored goals in tonight’s season opener to lift the Bulldogs to a 1-0 overall record.

TURNING POINT

Bangali got the game rolling with a goal during the seventh minute. Union was awarded a penalty, and Bangali had little issue in finding the back of the net to make 1-0.

The shots just kept falling in for the Bulldogs as Lucas De Paula connected with Rebelo for the second goal at the 26:30 mark, which followed by Bangali’s second goal of the night off of an Edwin Garcia assist.

Garcia collected another assist in finding the foot of Marques before the half-time horn. The final goal came after Patrick Carney found Mbaya in the 76th minute.

BULLDOG OF THE GAME

Bangali led the Bulldogs attack with seven shots with four on goal, resulting in two goals.

Union outshot Midway 41-9 overall and 20- 6 in shots on goal.

Union travels to Bethel University (Tenn.) on Wednesday for another non-conference matchup. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
