Obituary for Claude Edward Scalf (1941-2026)

Mr. Claude Edward Scalf, 84, of Barbourville, passed away Tuesday morning, August 18, 2026 at the Greg and Noreen Wells Hospice Care Center in Hazard.  He was born August 25, 1941 in Knox County, the son of the late Will and Cora Smith Scalf.

Claude was a self-employed mason and a believer in the Baptist faith.  He enjoyed being out of doors with his dog, Bill, and smoking a pipe.

In 1982, he united in marriage with Linda Sue Baker, who preceded him in death.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his siblings, Dorothy Bradley, Grace Chumbley, Loma Messer, Willie Scalf, Effie Scalf, Eathel Henson, Maude Dye, Flossie Wiles, William Scalf Jr., James and Chester Scalf.

Survivors include his sisters, Wanda Mongony of Warwick, RI and Joyce Daniels of Barbourville; 39 nieces and nephews; sister-in-law, Kathy Liford of Barbourville; brothers-in-law, John D. Baker Jr. and wife, Jackie, of Dewitt and Jim Baker and wife, Charlotte, of Corbin; among other loved ones and dear friends.

His funeral service will be conducted in the chapel of the Knox Funeral Home Sunday, August 23 at 3 P.M. with Rev. Tony Jackson officiating.  He will be laid to rest in the Tanyard Cemetery.

Casket bearers will be Franklin King, Shawn Daniels, Dennis Foley, Hubert Carnes, Danny Bunch, John D. Baker Jr. and Jim Baker.

Friends may visit at the funeral home Sunday after 1 P.M. until the funeral hour.
