On Thursday, December 6, 2018 Knox County Deputies Claude Hudson and Keith “Buster” Liford received the Medal of Honor award at the 2018 Kentucky Sheriff’s Association Conference Banquet held in Louisville.

The Kentucky Sheriff’s Association Medal of Honor is the highest form of recognition awarded by the KSA.

The Medal of Honor may be presented to a sworn member of a Sheriff’s Agency who as result of law enforcement action, distinguishes themselves by an act of extraordinary courage, while engaged in a personal confrontation with an armed adversary, at imminent personal danger to life, with knowledge of the risk, above and beyond the call of duty.

On June 12, 2017 Deputy Hudson and Deputy Liford were both shot in an exchange of gunfire while attempting to arrest a fugitive in the Trosper area of Knox County.

On that day, Deputy Liford and Deputy Hudson distinguished themselves showing extreme courage, commitment to duty and to each other in the face of such perilous circumstances.

Deputy Hudson returned to work after two weeks. Deputy Liford, who received life threatening injuries requiring several surgeries, has not yet returned to work.
