Obituary for Donna Sue Edwards (1948-2026)

Barbourville, Ky. – Donna Sue Edwards, 78, of Gray, passed away Tuesday, August 25, 2026. Donna was born in Whitesburg, Kentucky on April 28, 1948 to the late Riley and Norma Grimes Hughes. Donna was one of ten children, and the last survivor of her immediate “childhood” family. In 1967, Donna married Dave Edwards in Clintwood, Virginia. God blessed their union with three beautiful children: David Allen Edwards, Dave Edwards Jr. and Peggy Sue Edwards.

Donna had strong religious beliefs and attended church for years at the Gray Pentecostal Church, where her father-in-law, Tip Edwards, was a minister and a founding member. In her later years, Donna became a member of the Living Waters Pentecostal Church.

Donna enjoyed listening to music and she loved animals. She was described by her daughter, Peggy, as being a strong woman. Donna was a thoughtful person who gave selflessly to others. She loved children and would often babysit, when the need arose. Donna enjoyed gardening and canning to provide for her family. Donna also enjoyed being a caregiver to those who no longer could help themselves.

Left behind to mourn Donna’s passing is her son, David Allen Edwards and her daughter, Peggy Sue Edwards; her grandchildren, Richard Allen Edwards and wife Cheyenne, and Courtney Lynn Edwards; and her four great-grandchildren: Mariah, Isabella Evelyn and Zoey.

In addition to her parents, Riley and Norma Hughes, Donna was preceded in death by her husband Dave Edwards, by her son Dave Edwards Jr., and by her daughter-in-law Edna Edwards.

The Edwards family will receive friends at Hopper Funeral Home on Friday, August 28, 2026, from 12:00 PM until the funeral hour of 2:00 PM. Pastor Rodney Edwards will officiate.
