Mrs. Janice Bingham, age 86, of Barbourville, departed this life on Friday, October 2, 2026, in the Barbourville ARH Hospital.
Janice Lundy Bingham was born July 10, 1940, at her family home in Knox County, Kentucky, to Walter Davis Lundy and Hazel Smith Lundy. The eldest daughter in a family of ten children, Janice grew up surrounded by brothers and sisters who shared an exceptionally close bond, one they carried with them throughout their lives. On September 2, 1959, she married the love of her life, Arnold “Bubby” Bingham. Together, they created a home filled with faith, love, and laughter where they raised their children. In the years that followed, that same home would welcome two more generations, becoming a place filled with the family Janice held so close and who, in turn, loved her dearly.
Among Janice’s many accomplishments, one she was especially proud of was earning her degree in Community Health from Union College. A gifted seamstress with an incredible eye for style, she turned her creativity into Jan’s Fabrics, where she became known for her custom draperies and designer wallpaper installations. Her own home was her favorite project, and she was forever decorating, redecorating, and finding new ways to showcase her work, once even wallpapering her kitchen ceiling. It was in that very kitchen that Janice created some of the family’s favorite memories around the meals she prepared. Janice never needed a recipe and didn’t believe in letting anything go to waste; she had a knack for using whatever she had on hand to create something everyone loved. Her dry-rub roast was a family favorite, no one could resist her yellow sheet cake with warm chocolate sauce, and her Christmas Day lasagna became a tradition the whole family looked forward to each year. More than anything, Janice loved having her family gathered around her table, where meals often stretched into hours of conversation, laughter, and simply being together. Music was another constant in Janice’s life. A gifted musician, she played both the piano and organ. For her, music was much more than a hobby, it was an expression of her deep-rooted Christian faith and one of the ways she loved to serve the Lord. She began playing in church at a young age, leading to a lifetime of worship through music. Over the years, she played for countless church services and accompanied many gospel singers, but some of her most treasured music was made alongside her brother, David. The close bond they shared as brother and sister found a special expression in music, with Janice at the piano and David singing. What began when they were children grew into a lifelong ministry they shared until his passing. For nearly four decades, Highland Park Baptist Church held a special place in Janice’s heart. There, she could often be found at the organ, helping fill the sanctuary with the music she loved so much. Her church was more than a place she attended; her faith was at the heart of who she was. As her health declined and she was no longer able to attend services or sit at the organ, she deeply missed both the church family she loved and the opportunity to worship alongside them through music.
Janice leaves behind the family she loved so dearly: her son, Wayne Bingham and wife, Jean; her daughter, Kathy Bingham Detherage and husband, John; her sister, Joan Lundy; and her sister-in-law, Barbara Bingham. She was a cherished Mamaw to her four grandchildren, Loren Bingham Mills and husband, Justin; Steven Bingham and wife, Alexis; Katie Detherage Peery and husband, David; and Natalie Detherage Lorimer and husband, Matt. When the first of her great-grandchildren arrived, Janice decided that a new generation called for a new name, and she promptly renamed herself “Big Mamaw.” For the next sixteen years, she was Big Mamaw to Lucas Haverstock, Deacon Haverstock, Duke Mills, Georgia Mills, June Bingham, and her namesake, Lundy Bingham. She also leaves behind a large and loving circle of nieces, nephews, extended family, and dear friends who were woven throughout her life.
Janice was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Arnold “Bubby” Bingham; her parents, Walter Davis Lundy and Hazel Smith Lundy; her brothers, Bob Lundy, David Lundy, Paul Lundy, Kenneth Lundy, Marion Lundy, and John Lundy; her sister, Vivian Lundy Deitz; and her half-brother, Vernon Moore. Janice dedicated her life to using the gifts God gave her to create, to serve, and to love those around her. Her hands created beautiful things and played the hymns through which she worshiped the Lord she loved so deeply. Those same hands cared for those who meant everything to her, welcoming each new generation into the family she and Bubby created together. Through it all, her faith was constant, shaping the way she lived and the legacy she left behind. Those who knew Janice will remember her in countless ways, but to those who knew her best, she will simply and forever be Mom, Mamaw, and Big Mamaw. Her presence will be deeply missed, but the life she created and the love she gave will remain with her family for generations to come.
A funeral service for Janice will be held in the Hampton-Hutton Chapel at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, with the Rev. Jeff Branum and the Rev. Seth Branum officiating. She will be laid to rest at Binghamtown Cemetery beside her husband, Bubby. Pallbearers will be the deacons of Highland Park Baptist Church, her grandson Steven Bingham, and great-grandson Lucas Haverstock. Friends and loved ones will be received beginning at 12:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 6, 2026.
