Mitchell David Madden, of Tyner, KY, departed this life on Sunday, September 6th at the age of 48 years old. He was born on April 12th, 1978, in Manchester, KY to Sue Nichols and the late Mike Madden. Mitchell is survived by his loving wife Brandi, his daughters Allison Storm (Jimmy) and Gracie Madden (Blake Helphenstine), and his stepsons Jasper and Briley York. Alongside his mother, stepmother Elaine Madden, his three sisters, two stepbrothers Kevin and Michael Sexton, as well as a host of many other family and friends.
Mitchell was a devoted member of House of Refuge in Tyner, KY. His love and enduring faith for the Lord helped guide him and his family throughout his battle with cancer. Mitchell was a pillar of strength and inspiration showing positivity and courage in everything he faced.
Mitchell believed in hard work from a young age. He began trucking soon after high school and was infamously known and will forever be remembered as “Sunshine.” Mitchell pursued his lifelong dream and began his own trucking business, A & G Madden Trucking. He loved driving and working on his dump trucks. He valued what he worked for and everything he achieved.
There are people whose lives simply cannot be measured in years. Their lives are measured in the people they shaped, the lessons they taught, the stories told, and the pieces of themselves they left behind in others. Mitchell was one of those people. Long before he was “Coach,” he was a basketball player, and a legendary one at that, all-time leading scorer for Jackson County High School Generals. He loved the game, understood the game, and played it with the same fire that would eventually define him on the sidelines. Basketball was never just something he did. It was part of who he was.
As great as he was as a player, his greatest impact may have come when the ball was placed in the hands of the generations who came after him. Mitchell proudly coached both in assistant coach and head coach roles, over numerous years, for his alma mater the Jackson County Generals and Lady Generals. He later served as head coach for the Oneida Baptist Institute Mountaineers for 1 year and the Knox Central Panthers for 2 years. Mitchell built his highly successful KBE academy in 2018, in London, KY, as the demand increased from his grass roots lessons and travel teams he started many years earlier at the Annville Institute Gym.
Mitchell taught so much more than fundamentals and skills. He taught grit before grit was a word people put on T-shirts. He taught toughness, determination, discipline, teamwork, and respect. He could push you harder than you thought you could be pushed and somehow make you better because of it. Years later players realize the lessons Mitchell taught had very little to do with basketball. He was teaching them how to show up, fight through hard things, be part of something bigger than themselves, to lose without quitting, win without becoming bigger than the team, and believing in yourself when somebody else could see something in you that you couldn’t quite see yet. Mitchell loved basketball fiercely, but he loved his players, his friends, and his family even more. His voice will echo for generations. His words will be carried throughout everyday life by former players who grow up and discover that Coach had been preparing them for much more than the next game. That’s the thing about a great coach. Eventually, the practices end, the uniforms are put away, the scorebooks gather dust, the players grow up, but the coaching never really stops. Mitchell did not look at his illness as a battle. He proudly testified in church, “His play is already drawn out. He is a winner either way.”
Funeral Services for Mitchell will be held at 2 P.M. on Sunday September 13, 2026, at Lakes Funeral Home in McKee with Bro. Brian Gabbard and Bro. Bobby Mills presiding. Burial will follow in a private cemetery. Pallbearers include Angelo Smith, Chris Prater, Jake Hampton, Shawn Cavins, Shane Vickers, Walker Judd, Tyler Asher and Daron Rose.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, September 12, 2026, at the JCHS Board Gymnasium beginning at 4 P.M.
