Union Earns AAC Twinbill Split with Point

BARBOURVILLE, Ky. – The Union College baseball team grabbed an Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) split against Point (Ga.) on Friday, winning the first game 20-4 before falling 10-0 in the second game of the doubleheader action.

With the split, The Bulldogs are now 9-11 overall and 1-7 in AAC play, as the Skyhawks are 16-8 overall on the season and 6-2 in AAC.

Game One

The Bulldogs took a huge lead in the first inning scoring 14 runs off 11 hits. The standouts for the first inning were Daniel Neal with an RBI double, Sinjin Shoop with a two-run RBI single, Jake Mendoza hitting a triple with bases loaded to score three, and Francisco Ogando finishing out the inning with a two-run home run.

With the Bulldogs leading 14-0, Union added two additional runs in the bottom of the third after Ogando hit his second two-run homer of the game, bringing the score to 16-0.

Union continued their hot at bats, adding four more runs in the bottom of the fifth as Mendoza hit his second home run of the season over left field fence on a 1-0 count. The Bulldogs were up 17-0, and Zach Booth made his way to plate to earn his first RBI of the season with a single to shallow left field. The balls kept flying and the Bulldogs kept scoring as Ivan Objio lined an RBI single up the middle.

As the Bulldogs led 20-0 at the top of the seventh, Point came up to the plate with vengeance as Juan Reyes, and Mario Archibold each belted a two-run home run to finish out the game 20-4.

Mendoza led the Bulldogs in going 4-for-5, four runs scored, five RBIs, and a home run. Shoop and Ogando each went 3-for-4, and two runs, as Shoop finished with two RBIs and two stolen bases, while Ogando had four RBIs and two home runs.

On the mound, Austin Dingee recorded the win, pitching four complete innings and allowing no runs on three hits while striking out six.

Game Two

After a strong first game from the Bulldogs, Point started game two hot, scoring three in the first inning off three Union errors.

Then in the fifth and sixth the Skyhawks scored another three runs, off a combined six hits and two errors, taking a 9-0 lead.

The Bulldogs couldn’t gain back their offensive rhythm from the first game, falling 10-0.

Overall, Neal earned the two lone hits for the Bulldogs going 2-for-3 from the plate.
